R4C Project – Togo: YOUTH AWAKE restores coastal vegetation cover in the Lacs 2 commune.

The YOUTH AWAKE organization officially launched its project entitled « Restoration of coastal vegetation cover and sustainable management of mangroves in the canton of Agouègan, Lacs 2 commune. » The ceremony was attended by local authorities and representatives of the R4C project. The official launch was conducted by the Secretary General of the Prefecture.

This project was selected as part of the implementation of component 2 of the R4C-Togo project, led by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources since 2022. Over a period of 12 months, it includes:

• The planting of 12,500 mangrove seedlings over an area of 1.23 hectares;

• The installation of two environmental monitoring units;

• Capacity building for three women farmers’ groups, trained in new agricultural production technologies to improve their yields and establish sustainable income-generating activities (IGAs).

The village of Agbanakin was chosen as the intervention site due to the growing threats to its mangroves, which have now been largely replaced by sugarcane plantations.

« You are no doubt aware that today, the fragile ecosystem we commonly call mangroves, composed of mangrove trees, is highly threatened, if not endangered. For the village of Agbanakin, it is endangered; yet, this was the very origin of the mangrove trees, » Colonel ABALO emphasized in his speech.

The local population warmly welcomed this project, expressing their pride and commitment to protecting their environment. The Project to Strengthen the Resilience of Coastal Communities in Togo to Climate Change (R4C-Togo) is a government initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (FAO). This project aims to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities to the impacts of climate change by adopting an integrated approach based on ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods.

In conclusion, the local authorities praised the joint efforts of the Togolese government and YOUTH AWAKE in the fight against climate change. They also expressed their gratitude to technical and financial partners, particularly the GEF and FAO, for their multifaceted support, which actively contributes to strengthening the resilience of populations to the adverse effects of climate change.
